About

The Dirt. n. Scoops of rich soil worth sharing. The muddy prints of hiking, biking and other adventures. The true roots of food and how they nourish our body. Chunks of inspiration you’ll really want to absorb, apply and adhere to…and leave the rest in the dust.

The inspiration is in The Dirt: We are what we Do, Eat and Think.

My purpose is to fling Dirt at you, knowing that some of it will stick and the rest you’ll brush off. That’s fine…concentrate on the soil that sticks and it will change your life. I want to see my Dirt become part of “a seamless connection between you and nature.” (Jaimal Yogis)

I also consider part of this blog to be a Dirt tunnel: My secret passage to finding healthy recipes, nutritional wisdom and insightful stories. Moving you with striking photographs, fast-paced cycling tips and outdoor adventures that will take you to places you’ve never been.

Please share The Dirt with me and we’ll grow something beyond our imagination. No GMO’s allowed.

Me:

I am The Dirty author. Think of Pig-Pen from the comic strip Peanuts, but with pig tails and a bike helmet. Unrefined, unpolished and organic, but yet will reveal the sweet side of life that we all can relate to. My picture doesn’t portray the sweet side, but it’s revealing in other ways. I continue to experience the good, rich soil and bad, depleted dirt but

I know the seeds of life grow from both.

I never once thought I’d like to write, yet here I am…and writing about dirt no less. But I’m fresh on the scene. I’m overflowing with ideas and knowledge that I’ve sponged while homeschooling, being a partner and friend, making almond butter and pedaling up many mountains.

I have a schizophrenic college education (switched majors at the very end) in marketing and graphic design. And I’ve led a schizophrenic life, swinging like a monkey from the rat race to livin’ off the dirt. Early on, it was about city life, decadent dinners and emptying my soul in sales promotion agencies. Later on, it was about building green, feeding babies’ souls and growing a family from the ground up. My passions of eating real food and outdoor adventures persisted throughout.

Our family life has led us to places we never thought were possible until retirement. Not so much living the dream, more like living outside the mainstream dream. I guess swimming upstream…furiously in a raging river. From experiencing Amish life to living the high life. From eating dirty carrots pulled from the ground to building a duo-staircase house (not so green). From peeing in the woods to driving around a fancy SUV. I struggle with the balance of nature’s beauty vs. man-made beauty. But living in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado ultimately rules, and I choose to be around more dirt than ever. Simplicity and moments rise above the stuff.

I can ride my bikes, fondly gaze at my preferred skyline and be surrounded by my tree friends.

If you open me up, you’ll find a surprise inside. Like a prize in a Cracker Jack® box, you may symbolically find a tattoo, a weird alien, or even a goofy game. It depends on what you’re looking for. I won’t provide answers to life, but connections to answers. I don’t hold a crystal ball, but I do hold resources to finding a true path. Lead others and heal simultaneously. It’s truly about helping you that I will find peace, passion and purpose. Thanks for being my Dirty guinea pigs. Life experiments never thought possible…
